Is there anybody there? One beer for yes, two beers for no.
If you’re going a bit cruise-ship crazy in old Cadiz, take a catamaran to Puerto de Santa Maria. You’ll find lots of streets to explore and some good restaurants. The popular ones are on the main strip as you leave the boat, but go into town a bit for something a bit more personal. I walked past Zaccaria a couple of times at lunchtime and it was empty. The place next door was full. Zac’s menu looked rather good and they billed themselves as a gourmet restaurant, so although I usually move on when I see an empty place, I took a chance on this one. Yes! Good move! My reward was a perfectly grilled whole sole and a few cold beers. So why was it empty? As I tried to explain to the waitress/proprietor in poor Spanglish, it just looked as if it was shut when I walked past. Nothing on the outside tables, not even a menu or some cutlery, just to show it was open. I’m not sure if I got that across to her, but if you walk past Zaccaria’s anytime, give it a try.
