Another cracking new place in town. You Guerseynais are spoilt!
Right on the south point of St Peter Port is a newly refurbished temple to seafood. A modern, bright place full of French and Lithuanian waiting staff, keen to please and advise when asked. I tried lunch first and was delighted with six juicy oysters and a glass of cold local cider (Roquette). My choice of steamed crab as a main was a good one for me, but sadly not for the crab, which was swimming along happily in a tank behind me a few minutes earlier. The waitress asked me if I wanted to see it first but I declined. Well, what would I have said to it? “Hi crab, I win, you lose”. No, I’ll just take it on the plate. Well it took me nearly an hour to get all the bits cracked and sucked, so if you don’t want a faffy meal, order something else. Thing is though, this was something else. I’ve had crab before but to have it so fresh like this was a crustacean revelation. Just a bit of seaweed butter, no strong flavours, and a bowl full of lovely juices to dip your frites in at the end. Honestly, this was so good I took Mrs Harry there that evening for a meal and had the tastiest bouillabaisse outside of Marseille. This time I was treated to some sourdough bread to dip in. Don’t neglect this one.
